What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is a physical therapy designed to diagnose and treat the musculoskeletal system of the body.

This is done using a holistic approach, which means that all elements of the patient's wellbeing are taken into account when assessing and treating their condition.

At times this may mean that areas of the body away from those where pain is felt may be treated to influence the recovery of the problem area.

What to expect

Initially the Osteopath will take a full presenting history, discussing the problems you are currently experiencing. They will also take a full medical history and ask if you have had any other problems previously that may be relevant.

Following this a full assessment is carried out looking at the mechanics of the body, involving your posture, the health of the muscles and joints, as well as any other elements that may be contributing to your presentation. This should allow a clear diagnosis and prognosis to be given before treatment starts, and allows the patient to ask any questions or concerns they may have.

Treatment

Treatment will usually involve a variety of soft tissue techniques working into the muscles, tendons and ligaments. Articulation and manipulation of relevant joints will be used to try and improve their mobility and range of motion. In addition to this, stretching and traction of the spine may be carried out. These techniques are designed to improve your musculoskeletal health and reduce your symptoms.

The osteopath may also discuss the use of medical acupuncture, which is a very powerful tool to help in the recovery process. It is not appropriate for use in all cases, but if your practitioner thinks it will assist in a quicker recovery they will discuss its possible use with you. To find out more please read the section about medical acupuncture.

Post-Treatment Care

In addition to any treatment, patients will usually be given exercises designed to further improve their symptoms. These are designed to work with areas such as control of posture, flexibility, strength and functional use.
